Peptide Safety UK
Unregulated "research peptides" are sold widely online but carry serious health risks. Here's what you need to know to stay safe.
MHRA Warning
The MHRA has issued warnings about unlicensed peptide products sold online. These products are not quality-controlled, may contain harmful substances, and have been linked to serious adverse events including hospitalisations.
What Are Peptides?
Peptides are short chains of amino acids - smaller than proteins but with important biological functions. Many legitimate medications are peptides:
Legitimate Peptide Medications
- • Insulin (diabetes)
- • Semaglutide / Wegovy (weight loss)
- • Tirzepatide / Mounjaro (weight loss)
- • Growth hormone (deficiency)
- • Various other prescription medications
"Research Peptides" (Unregulated)
- • Sold online as "not for human use"
- • No quality control or verification
- • Unknown contents and purity
- • No medical oversight
- • Illegal to sell as medicines
The "Research Chemical" Loophole
Products labelled "for research only" or "not for human consumption" are attempting to avoid medicine regulations. This label doesn't make them legal to sell for human use, and it certainly doesn't make them safe.
The Risks of Unregulated Peptides
- Bacterial contamination (injection infections)
- Heavy metals (arsenic, lead, mercury)
- Endotoxins and pyrogens
- Residual solvents from manufacturing
- Cross-contamination with other substances
- No active ingredient at all
- Significantly underdosed (no effect)
- Significantly overdosed (toxic effects)
- Inconsistent doses between batches
- Wrong peptide entirely
- Peptides degrade if not properly stored
- Unknown storage conditions during shipping
- No cold chain guarantee
- Degraded products may be ineffective or harmful
- Cannot verify product hasn't been compromised
- Selling unlicensed medicines is illegal
- No medical screening for contraindications
- No monitoring for adverse effects
- No legal recourse if harmed
- No MHRA oversight or batch recall capability
Common "Research Peptides" and Their Risks
| Peptide | Claimed Use | Legitimate Version | Risk Level |
|---|---|---|---|
| Semaglutide | Weight loss, Type 2 diabetes | Wegovy, Ozempic | High concern |
| Tirzepatide | Weight loss, Type 2 diabetes | Mounjaro | High concern |
| BPC-157 | Claimed healing/recovery | None approved | No human safety data |
| TB-500 | Claimed healing/recovery | None approved | No human safety data |
| Melanotan | Tanning | None approved | MHRA warned against |
| AOD-9604 | Claimed fat loss | None approved | Limited human data |
Note: Even for peptides that have legitimate approved versions (like semaglutide), the unregulated "research" versions are not equivalent and carry the same contamination and dosing risks.
Real Cases of Harm
Healthcare authorities have documented cases where unregulated peptides caused:
- Injection site infections - from non-sterile products requiring hospital treatment and IV antibiotics
- Severe hypoglycaemia - from contaminated weight loss peptides causing dangerous blood sugar crashes
- Allergic reactions - to unknown contaminants in products
- Cardiovascular events - from products containing substances not listed on the label
- Permanent skin discolouration - from tanning peptides like Melanotan
How to Stay Safe
Use only MHRA-approved medications
If a legitimate version exists (e.g., Wegovy for semaglutide), get it through proper channels with a prescription.
Get prescriptions from registered providers
GP, specialist clinic, or CQC-registered online service. Verify credentials before using any service.
Use only GPhC-registered pharmacies
Verify on the GPhC register. Online pharmacies should display the EU common logo that links to the MHRA.
Be sceptical of "research" labels
"Research use only" or "not for human consumption" labels are red flags, not reassurances. Legitimate medications don't need these disclaimers.
Report adverse reactions
If you've had a reaction to any product, report it to the MHRA Yellow Card scheme. This helps protect others.
