Do You Qualify for NHS Weight Loss Treatment?
Use this guide to check if you meet the NHS eligibility criteria for GLP-1 weight loss medications like Wegovy and Mounjaro. Understanding the requirements can help you prepare for your GP appointment.
This is an Informational Guide Only
Only your GP or specialist can formally assess your eligibility. Criteria may vary by local NHS area. This guide helps you understand the general requirements before speaking with your healthcare provider.
Step 1: Check Your BMI
BMI (Body Mass Index) is a key eligibility factor. Here are the NHS thresholds:
35+
Standard Threshold
No additional conditions required
Likely Eligible30-34.9
With Health Condition
Need weight-related comorbidity
May Be Eligible27.5+
Adjusted Threshold
South Asian, Chinese backgrounds
With ConditionHow to Calculate Your BMI
BMI = Weight (kg) ÷ Height (m)²
Example: If you weigh 90kg and are 1.7m tall: 90 ÷ (1.7 × 1.7) = 90 ÷ 2.89 = 31.1 BMI
Your GP will calculate your BMI during your appointment. You can also use the NHS BMI calculator online to get an estimate beforehand.
Step 2: Do You Have a Weight-Related Condition?
If your BMI is between 30-35, having one of these conditions may qualify you:
Note: Your GP will assess whether your condition is related to your weight. You don't need a formal diagnosis for all conditions - your GP can identify risk factors during assessment.
Step 3: Have You Tried Lifestyle Changes?
NHS guidelines require you to have attempted structured lifestyle interventions before medication. This typically means:
- NHS weight management programme (Tier 2/3)
- Structured diet programme (e.g., commercial weight loss group)
- GP-supervised diet and exercise plan
- Previous prescription of Orlistat
- Self-directed dieting without medical support
- Gym membership alone
- Dietary supplements or over-the-counter products
- Very short-term attempts (<12 weeks)
Haven't tried a structured programme yet? Your GP can refer you to local weight management services. Completing this step is often required before medication is prescribed.

What to Do Next
Book a GP Appointment
Schedule an appointment specifically to discuss weight management options. Mention you're interested in GLP-1 medications. Your GP can assess your eligibility and explain local pathways.
Prepare for Your Appointment
Bring information about: your weight history, previous weight loss attempts, any weight-related health conditions, and current medications. Know your height and recent weight if possible.
Understand Your Options
If you qualify, your GP may prescribe directly (Mounjaro in some areas) or refer you to a specialist weight management service. If you don't qualify yet, they can refer you to lifestyle programmes first.
Consider Private Options
If NHS waiting lists are long or you don't meet criteria, private prescription is an alternative. Costs range from £150-£350/month but access is faster with lower BMI thresholds. Always use GPhC-registered providers.
